These are the times that try men's souls. It's early in the morning (there's much to do before Matins) and as I type I can hear the Curate in the other room listening to the cricket on the wireless, occasionally letting out a sigh of profound depression. From to time he tries to put an optimistic gloss on the score, like the Black Knight in the Monty Python film who says "it's just a flesh wound" when it's clear his arm has just been cut off. But then reality reasserts itself.

We've had to cancel plans for a parish trip to New York to see Bob Dylan's musical "The Times They Are A Changin'" owing to the fact that it's closed after a handful of performances and reviews that are described as "mixed".
It's a parish tradition that we accompany the mixing of the Christmas cake with a few favourite yuletide pop tunes. This year we're delighted to see that our friends at Word magazine have included Davitt Sigerson's masterful 1981 Christmas obscurity "It's A Big Country" on their new cover CD. What are the other great alternative Christmas hits? Over to you.
From time to time The Vicar's likes to communicate with the parish via email. If you'd like to be added to his address book, just click below.
New edition out now:

Our definitive guide to The Worst of the Internet. Former KLF agent-provocateur Bill Drummond reveals why you'll never get to hear The Future of Music.
